Therapeuō, Transpersonal Hypnotherapy: A Faith-Based Path to Healing Trauma and Addictions

Healing at the Intersection of Faith and Neuroscience

Let’s be real: most of us are walking around doing life with unhealed stories tucked away from our consciousness but still living well in our nervous systems. We try to think our way out of pain, mask it with forced positivity, or hustle for worth. But healing isn’t a hustle. It’s a surrender.

You don’t need another self-help checklist or productivity hack—you need to breathe, to feel, and to listen to the parts of you that got quiet just to survive. That’s what soul-level healing asks of us. Not more effort—but some stillness.

That’s where transpersonal hypnotherapy comes in—a fancy term for something that is surprisingly gentle and on par with guided meditation. A deeply integrative approach to holistic healing that honors every part of you: body, mind, spirit, and soul. And if you’re a word nerd like me, it gets even better.

Hypnotherapy: Healing Through Rest (Not Mind Control)

The word hypno comes from the Greek for “sleep,” but hypnosis isn’t sleep—it’s a relaxed, receptive state where the mind quiets, and the deeper self can speak. Think of it as soul-level listening. You’re awake, aware, and always in control.  And then, therapeuō (the Greek root of “therapy”) literally means “to serve, care for, and restore.” In the Bible, when Jesus healed people, the word used was often therapeuō. Not just a quick fix, but the kind of soul-tending that changes you from the inside out.

So before we go any further, let’s bust a myth: hypnotherapy is not creepy, dark, or some kind of mind-control party trick. It’s not hypnotizing you into clucking like a chicken or spilling your secrets. Think of it as guided meditation with intention.    You’re fully aware. You’re just deeply relaxed. Like “I haven’t felt this calm since  (ever??)  that one beach vacation in 2012” kind of relaxed.    It’s in this space that the subconscious opens, your defenses drop, and healing happens-spiritually, emotionally, neurologically.

The Levels of Consciousness:

Your mind has layers, like an onion (minus the tears). Here’s a quick cheat sheet:

  • Beta: Alert, logical, making grocery lists and judging yourself (kidding… but not really).
  • Alpha: Chill mode. Daydreaming, praying, meditating.
  • Theta: Deep calm. That sweet spot for healing, where we do hypnotherapy, guided inner work.
  • Delta: Deep sleep. Your body restores itself here.
  • Gamma: Bursts of insight, awe, or divine revelation. Think breakthrough clarity, or those “aha” moments.

A Christian-Friendly Framework

Still feeling unsure because you were raised to be suspicious of anything that sounds “woo”? You’re not alone. But here’s the deal: transpersonal hypnotherapy can absolutely align with a Christ-centered worldview, and more Christian practitioners are embracing this as a tool for emotional and spiritual healing.

Cofounder of The National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists, Dr. Allen Chips, explains how this approach honors Christian values like compassion, forgiveness, and grace. Clients are never pushed outside their faith. If anything, they’re guided deeper into it.

When we do transpersonal hypnotherapy together, if you are so aligned, we might use Scripture and prayer. As a Christian myself, I believe all healing comes from God no matter what method is used to meet HIM. Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, we will always honor your beliefs, your story, and your pace.

What a Session Looks Like (No Cloaks or Crystals ..lol)

Here’s a peek into a hypnotherapy session:

We will begin with an awakened chat to see what’s happening in your world, what your thoughts and intentions are for the session. You set the tone; I just make it happen.

  • Entering Theta: You settle into a comfy chair, and I guide you into deep relaxation. You’re aware, not asleep.
  • Inner Dialogue: We may discuss your internal world as thoughts or feelings arise. You may receive messages or guidance that answer questions for you. You might discover old limiting beliefs that block you emotionally or hinder your present growth.
  • Guided Imagery: I use guided imagery and make suggestions based on your intentions. This will facilitate healing and create positive changes.
  • Release & Reflect: I will gently guide you out of the hypnotic state, and we will spend time reflecting on your experience and discussing outcomes.

You leave feeling lighter. Not fixed (because you’re not broken)—but more whole. More you.

Why It Works (and Why It Matters)

Let’s be honest: Most of us try to heal by thinking harder. We Google things. We buy books. We journal until our hands cramp. But real transformation does not happen in the conscious or rational mind. This is where transpersonal hypnotherapy shines. It goes to the root cause, not just the symptom.  It integrates the mind-body-spirit connection and welcomes spirit-led healing. It’s not just therapy. It’s soul care.

How This Helps with Addiction and Trauma Recovery

We know that addiction isn’t just about substances or habits. It’s about pain, unmet needs, and nervous systems stuck in survival mode. And trauma? Trauma gets stored in the body and buried into the subconscious like an unwanted houseguest.

Transpersonal hypnotherapy creates a safe space to meet the parts of you that were  abandoned,  shamed, unprotected, and abused—and bring them home in a loving and healing manner.Especially in addiction recovery or inner child healing, this work helps you:

  • Identify the emotional wounds that fueled the addiction and/or toxic patterns repeating themselves as an adult.
  • Help manage anxiety and depression; curb addictive behaviors.
  • Rewire negative and limiting beliefs like “I’m not enough” and learn authentic self-love; self-care and find a deep sense of self-worth.
  • Feel peace where triggers used to live
  • Free yourself from your parents, your past, and your childhood programing. You will reclaim your life from the inside out.

Final Thoughts: Healing Isn’t Hustle

Let me leave you with this: healing isn’t hustle.  It’s not about trying harder.  It’s not about trying to control your own thoughts or becoming a “human-doing”, you know a caffeine-powered walking to-do list. It’s about rooting out the old thoughts that kept you alive then but no longer serve you now,  and replacing them with loving, healthy, nurturing beliefs about yourself and those around you.

So, if you’re tired of striving, being stuck in repetitive destructive cycles, or just curious about what it might feel like to breathe a little easier, I invite you:
